Hula Cutie

Hula Cutie is a parody of Betty Boop. Her creation was inspired by Betty's appearance in Betty Boop's Bamboo Isle. She appeared with Cab Calloway in several commercials for Hula Hoops.

She was created because instead of licensing Betty Boop, it is much cheaper to make a parody. As no royalties or payment has to be made to the Fleischer Studios.

Parody does not infringe and is often considered to be fair use.

KP Snacks Ltd decided to create a parody, but at the same time also incorporated their own unique concept into the Hula Cutie, so that she didn't fully resemble Betty.

She wears a similar hula attire to Betty Boop, only it is altered. Instead of spit curls, she has big red-orange fuzzy hair. Her Hula Hoops crisp also serve as her earrings and hula hoop. Not to be confused with the brand name of the crisp, a hula hoop is also a toy hoop, that can be used to twirl around the waist, and is often used for entertainment purposes.

The Hula Cutie first appeared in 1987 and made her last appearance during the early 90s. Instead of saying "Boop" the Hula Cutie says "Hoop". The motto was, "Eat don't hula." In the 1991 commercial Calloway says that she likes a "Hula Bula Hoop", and that she prefers to hoop her Hula Hoop crisp around her waist than eat it.
